Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, called for the resignation of Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese, who is the subject of a criminal investigation. Joining McCarthy in the call for Meese to step down were fellow Democrats Shirley Hufstedler, a former appellate court judge and secretary of education in the Carter Administration, and Joseph Mandel, a former president of the Los Angeles County Bar Assn. McCarthy said public officials--particularly the nation’s top law enforcement officer--have a duty to set “positive, unambiguous ethical standards.” Independent counsel James McKay has been probing Republican Meese’s ethical, legal and financial affairs.
