The Green Bay Packers Thursday acquired veteran defensive lineman Blaise Winter from the Chargers for past considerations.

Winter is a 6-foot 3-inch, 275-pound third-year pro out of Syracuse who was originally drafted by the Colts in 1985 in the second round. He played in 23 NFL games for the Colts and Chargers, playing for the Chargers last season during the strike.

HIGH SCHOOLS

St. Augustine High School has named Mike Stephenson as its head varsity baseball coach, replacing Bill Whittaker, who is retiring after this season.

It is the first head varsity assignment for Stephenson, 32, who graduated from University of San Diego High School in 1973.

He has been an assistant baseball coach at St. Augustine for the past two years.

Previously, he was an assistant coach at La Jolla Country Day in 1984 and at Sacramento High School in 1978 and 1979.

“I’m real happy about it,” Stephenson said. “After being an assistant, it will be nice to be able to make decisions and be in charge.

“We’ll be very aggressive. The program’s been down, and you have to learn to win before you can win. We’re a young team right now, and we’ll show a lot of improvement next year.”

The Saints are 7-10, 4-4 in the City Central League.

Earlier, St. Augustine named one-time Christian coach Marty Martin as its athletic director and football coach.

BASEBALL

Chris Murphy tripled and scored to break a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning as UC San Diego, ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Division III, defeated No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino, 6-3, at UCSD.

The win eliminated San Bernardino (28-5-1) from contention for a playoff berth and kept UCSD’s hopes alive. The top two teams in the Western Region advance. No. 7 Cal State Stanislaus appears to have clinched one bid. UCSD (23-12) appears to have the inside track for the other berth in the tournament, which begins the third week in May.

Murphy, who was 3 for 4, scored when Eric Judson singled. Brian Duffy (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season.

UCSD’s Rick Nowak (8-4) came in during the third innings to replace starter Brian Abbott, who left with a sore shoulder. Nowak struck out 10 and allowed three hits in 6 innings for the victory.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Fullerton swept a doubleheader from San Diego State, 6-3 and 5-1, in Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. softball at Fullerton.

In the first game, Fullerton (48-14, 21-7) was led by Valerie Van Kirk and Missy Coombes, who each drove in two runs. In the second game, Janis Okerlund (13-3) threw a four-hitter.
