Morning Sickness

The Pit Bull of Evening Radio is about to become the Pit Bull of Morning Radio. That’s right--KMPC-FM’s obnoxious insult artist, Guy Kemp, is taking over the struggling station’s 6-to-10 a.m. shift Monday. The move came as a jolt to morning deejay Cynthia Fox, who abruptly resigned last week rather than assume Kemp’s evening shift.

Fox went out with a blast at Kemp: “I don’t feel I’m a problem that needed to be fixed, and I felt I deserved better treatment,” said Fox, who concluded her last shift by playing Bob Marley’s “Get Up Stand Up for Your Rights.” “I think Guy is a liability at this station and is continuing to alienate people. His whole on-air demeanor is very offensive, vulgar and one-dimensional. I’m all for humor, but I’d like to see Guy use some imagination instead of getting laughs by hanging up on people and treating the audience like fools.”

Program director Sam Bellamy said the move was strictly an “academic” decision based on “the fact that when you compared Cynthia’s ratings with Guy’s, the station would be better served with him on in the mornings.” Bellamy said Fox is “one of the most talented people in radio (but) maybe she’s not cut out to do mornings.”
