Micropolis earned $7.2 million, or 63 cents a share, in the first quarter ended April 1, a 16% increase from the $6.2 million, or 55 cents a share, earned a year earlier.

Sales for the Chatsworth maker of disk-drive data storage equipment rose 30% to $80.5 million.

Dundas I. Flaherty, the company’s chief financial officer, said the earnings increase was not as high as the quarterly increases Micropolis generally has posted over the past two years because of development costs for new products.
