Local News in Brief : Gang Truce Requested
Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alatorre, law enforcement officials and community leaders Monday called for a weeklong truce among Latino and other gangs in honor of the upcoming Cinco de Mayo celebrations and Mother’s Day.
Speaking in front of a Boyle Heights house where a 19-year-old honor student was killed in a gang-related drive-by shooting April 23, Alatorre appealed for gang members “to honor a week of peace culminating on Mother’s Day and to provide for safe and happy Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the Eastside and throughout Los Angeles.”
Los Angeles Police Sgt. Robert Normandy said extra security is planned for the traditional May 5 parades and festivals and one scheduled at Lincoln Park on Saturday and Sunday. Last year, one man was fatally stabbed in gang-related clashes at the park.
“Past truces between gangs have worked,” Alatorre said.
