Local News in Brief : Jail for Cheese Makers

Share

A brother and sister were sentenced Monday to four months in County Jail for managing an illegal cheese-making operation where a potentially deadly bacteria was discovered.

Lourdes Montoya Cabrera, 27, and Moises Cabrera, 21, were also sentenced to three years’ informal probation by Municipal Court Commissioner Barry Kohn after pleading no contest to one count of manufacturing adulterated cheese at three residences and garages in South-Central Los Angeles.

The Cabreras were the last of 12 people to be convicted in connection with the illegal cheese-making operation, in which queso fresco cheese and crema, a sour cream-style milk product, were manufactured. The bacteria listeria monocytogemes was found in samples of the product, officials said.
