Man Surrenders After Holding 14 Hostages
A man went to the American Telephone & Telegraph Co. office where his former wife works and took 14 people hostage Monday with a toy gun and a fake hand grenade--but she was in a New Jersey court getting a protection order against him.
Police said Bill Saunders of Princeton, N.J., surrendered on the 25th floor of the Lower Manhattan building across from the World Trade Center about 2 1/2 hours after the incident began and shortly after the last hostage walked free. Authorities said the incident stemmed from a custody dispute.
