Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth said that major league baseball teams may sign prospective Olympic players but won’t pay them bonuses or salaries so that they may maintain their eligibility for the Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea.

A similar arrangement was made in 1984 when the United States finished second in the 8-team Olympic tournament. Baseball was a demonstration sport in the 1984 Games and will be again in Seoul.
