Countrywide Credit Industries broke off direct talks with an investment group led by the Belzberg family of Canada on April 15. According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Belzberg group met twice with representatives of Countrywide, which is based in Pasadena. The Belzberg group, which owns 7.6% of Countrywide, has said that it may seek control of the mortgage banking concern through an exchange offer or a merger, or it may seek representation on the company’s board.
