Reception to Honor Gompers Scholars

A reception will be held at 2:15 p.m. today at Gompers Secondary School to honor the school’s team, which last week won the national championship in Washington at the National Bicentennial Competition on the Constitution.

The Gompers students, coached by history teacher David Vigilante, defeated more than 1,000 high school students representing 43 states in the three-day event testing knowledge of the Constitution.

The 20 Gompers students won the right last January to represent California when they finished first in the state competition in Sacramento.

The competition involved splitting the students into groups of four, who were then grilled by experts on specific parts of the Constitution, such as the Bill of Rights and the equal-protection clause of the 14th Amendment.
