College Roundup : Pomona’s Koklys Throws Six-Hitter to Stop Chapman

Wayne Koklys threw a six-hitter Tuesday as Cal Poly Pomona moved into sole possession of first place with an 8-3 victory over Chapman College in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball game at Hart Park in Orange.

Koklys (10-3) struck out seven and walked one. He didn’t give up any extra-base hits and allowed just one run over the final six innings for Pomona.

Brian Grier and Chris Butterfield each had three hits for Pomona (25-18, 14-7). Grier had a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and Butterfield drove in two runs with two doubles.

David Bird (7-5) went 4 innings and took the loss for the Panthers (23-23-1, 12-12). Tony Gardea was 2 for 4 for Chapman, which has lost four straight and 9 of its last 12.

In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. softball:

Cal State Fullerton 6-0, Cal State Long Beach 5-2 (First game 8 innings)--Missy Coombes doubled to score Charis Monroe, who had singled in the eighth inning of the first game for Fullerton (49-17, 22-10). Chris Gage (6-2) got the victory. Long Beach was shut out in the second game by Annette Gonzales for Long Beach (42-15, 21-11).

In the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. golf championships:

Danny Yrene of New Mexico State defeated Jeff Protzo of Cal State Fullerton and Kevin Pedigo of Nevada Las Vegas on the third playoff hole to win the men’s individual golf championship at the Fort Ord Bayonet golf course.

The three were tied at 225 after 54 holes. Pedigo was eliminated on the second playoff hole and Yrene shot a par on the third hole to edge Protzo, who had a double-bogey.

Price Shoemaker of UC Irvine finished fourth at 227 and Tim Wilcox of Fresno State finished fifth at 227.
