Local News in Brief : Parade Group Loses Round

Share

Organizers of the Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride parade and festival have lost a preliminary bid to overturn the city’s requirements for liability insurance and reimbursement of the city’s costs for the annual events.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Barnet M. Cooperman rejected the organizers’ request to strike down the requirements, ruling that a lawsuit filed by Lesbian and Gay Pride Inc. will have to be decided at a full trial.

Attorneys in the case said that Cooperman’s decision means the organizers must have $1 million in liability insurance and be prepared to reimburse the city for this year’s parade and festival, scheduled for May 14 and 15.

About 1,000 participants were drawn to the 1.7-mile parade last year.

The group is also seeking reimbursement of fees charged by the city in past years, which have ranged from $10,583 to $18,583 since the events started in 1984. The costs involve posting “No Parking” signs, erecting barricades and policing the park.
