Stalwars Won’t Run in the Derby; Delahoussaye to Ride Risen Star
Stalwars, who has had a variety of physical problems since leaving California, was withdrawn from the Kentucky Derby Thursday because of a fever, leaving a field of 17 starters.
There will be a pair of entries, Forty Niner and Cefis, and Lively One and Intensive Command, plus Winning Colors, Private Terms, Kingpost, Brian’s Time, Proper Reality, Granacus, Jim’s Orbit, Seeking the Gold, Din’s Dancer, Regal Classic, Sea Trek, Purdue King and Risen Star.
Owner-trainer Louie Roussel, ending a stretch of indecision, finally named Eddie Delahoussaye to ride Risen Star. Delahoussaye, winner of two Derbies, flew from California to work Risen Star here Tuesday, then was left hanging for 24 hours while Roussel reviewed videotapes of workouts with other jockeys.
The elimination of Stalwars will prevent Chris McCarron from trying to ride the Derby winner for the second straight year. McCarron won with Alysheba last year.
