Local News in Brief : 6-Month Coliseum Pact

Share

The Los Angeles Coliseum Commission, unable to agree on ratification of a contract for the private management of the Coliseum and Sports Arena, voted instead Thursday to give a six-month consulting contract to the proposed private manager, the MCA Inc.-Spectacor business partnership.

The commission said that, in the meantime, attempts would proceed to come up with revised terms of a five-year management contract so that it can be ratified in 30 days.

In a lengthy debate, it appeared that the required two-thirds voting majority for ratification of the originally proposed contract, negotiated over a six-month period, could not be obtained. One problem stems from fears of officials of neighboring state museums that overuse of the Coliseum facilities would be detrimental to attendance at the museums.

The failure to ratify Thursday means, at the least, that $10 million in Sports Arena and Coliseum improvements that were to have been financed by MCA Inc.-Spectacor will not immediately go forward.
