Spain has ordered its consulates around the world to deny visas to all South African athletes seeking to compete in Spain, including golfers entered in next week’s $374,000 Spanish Open golf championship, the Foreign Ministry said today.

Ministry spokesman Alberto Buitron said the new guidelines prohibit all South African athletes from competing in Spain. Exceptions would be made if the South Africans were to compete in events protesting apartheid, South Africa’s policy of racial segregation.
