THE KENTUCKY DERBY : Outside Posts for Private Terms and Forty Niner

Private Terms and Forty Niner, two of the leading candidates to win Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, drew the outside post positions Thursday, seriously compromising Forty Niner’s chances and slightly dimming those of Private Terms.

Private Terms drew the No. 16 post, and Forty Niner has No. 17 in the 17-horse field.

Forty Niner, who likes to race in or near the lead, may have to expend considerable energy to catch another speedster, Winning Colors, by the time they make the long run to the first turn of the 1-mile race. Winning Colors, the only filly in the field, is in the No. 11 spot, separated by five horses from Forty Niner on the outside.

Charlie Hadry, who trains the undefeated Private Terms, would like to see his colt about six lengths behind the leaders going down the backstretch. Because Private Terms runs with less early speed than Forty Niner, his outside post shouldn’t be as great a handicap.

Since 1900, however, only two horses have won the Derby after breaking from a post outside No. 15. Clyde Van Dusen was No. 20 in 1929, and Gato Del Sol was 19 in 1982.

Private Terms was made the 5-2 favorite by Mike Battaglia, the Churchill Downs line-setter, with Winning Colors next at 3-1 and the entry of Forty Niner and Cefis at 5-1.

Risen Star, the Louisiana Derby winner who is 6-1 in the line, drew the inside post, which is also considered anathema, based on Derby history, although Ferdinand broke from the No. 1 stall en route to victory two years ago.

Here is the Derby field, with jockeys and odds:

Risen Star, Eddie Delahoussaye, 6-1; Cefis, Eddie Maple, 5-1; Regal Classic, Laffit Pincay, 15-1; Kingpost, Jorge Velasquez, 30-1; Brian’s Time, Angel Cordero, 12-1; Granacus, Jacinto Vasquez, 30-1; Intensive Command, Julio Pezua, 15-1; Seeking the Gold, Randy Romero, 8-1; Din’s Dancer, John Lively, 15-1; Sea Trek, Pat Johnson, 15-1; Winning Colors, Gary Stevens, 3-1; Proper Reality, Jerry Bailey, 15-1; Jim’s Orbit, Shane Romero, 30-1; Purdue King, Kent Desormeaux, 15-1; Lively One, Bill Shoemaker, 15-1; Private Terms, Chris Antley, 5-2, and Forty Niner, Pat Day, 5-1.

There are two betting entries, Forty Niner and Cefis, and Lively One and Intensive Command. The horses in the mutuel field--which means that a bet on one is a bet on all--are Regal Classic, Din’s Dancer, Sea Trek and Purdue King.

It was announced before the draw that Lively One and Intensive Command, who have been running in Nelson Bunker Hunt’s name, will run under a lease agreement with Thomas J. Curnes. The change may be only for bookkeeping purposes, since Curnes is married to Hunt’s daughter, Elizabeth.

Only five of the Derby starters--Cefis, Brian’s Time, Seeking the Gold, Proper Reality and Private Terms--will be running without medication.

Certified bleeders who will be treated with diuretics are Regal Classic, Granacus, Kingpost, Jim’s Orbit, Purdue King and Lively One. All have raced with Lasix before.

Forty Niner is running for the first time on phenylbutazone, a painkiller, probably because of a tender foot that resulted from a shoeing accident last month.

All of the starters, except Winning Colors, will carry 126 pounds. Because of her sex allowance, she will carry 121.

The value of the race is $786,200, with $611,200 going to the winner. Post time Saturday is 2:33 p.m., PDT.
