Six governors endorsed fellow Gov. Michael S. Dukakis for the Democratic presidential nomination Friday, saying that “it is time for the party leadership to unite” behind him.

The endorsements give Dukakis, serving his third term as governor of Massachusetts, the support of 11 of the 26 other Democratic state governors. He also has the endorsements of the governors of Puerto Rico and American Samoa.

“Gov. Dukakis has emerged as the clear leader in the Democratic nominating process,” Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton said. “It is time for the party leadership to unite behind his candidacy.”
