Kujawski Beaten in Tournament

Defending champion Pat Kujawski of Rancho Bernardo was ousted Friday from the women’s 50-and-over National Hardcourt Tennis Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

Unseeded Marlene Abel of Los Angeles beat No. 3 Kujawski, 6-3, 6-4, in a quarterfinal. Abel will meet top-seeded Dorothy Matthiessen of Pasadena at 9:15 this morning in a semifinal. Matthiessen beat Georgia Turner of El Cajon, 6-0, 6-1.

Also at 9:15, second-seeded Jane Crofford of Nashville, Tenn., will play fourth-seeded Doris de Vries of Orangevale.

Fifth-year senior Scott Patridge was named most valuable player at the University of San Diego men’s awards banquet. Patridge received an award as the team’s No. 1 singles player, and he and Dave Stewart were named the top doubles team. Rob MacKay received the team captain award, and Curtis Dadian was named most inspirational player.

Angelica Gavaldon of Coronado lost, 7-5, 7-6, to Lisa Raymond of Wayne, Pa., in a semifinal of the girls’ 16s at the Seventeen magazine tournament in Mission Viejo. Gavaldon had advanced with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Keri Phebus of Newport Beach. In the 18s, Cammie Foley of Bonita lost, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals to second-seeded Krista Amend of San Pedro.

GOLF

The University of New Mexico’s Derek Crawford shot a second-round 73 to pull into a first-place tie with Utah’s Eric Nielsen at 142 after 36 holes of the Western Athletic Conference championships at Provo, Utah.

Utah leads New Mexico by one shot. San Diego State is sixth with 613, 32 behind Utah. San Diego State’s Scott Almquist is tied for 10th place at 149, seven back.

TRACK AND FIELD

The San Diego State men’s team is second in the Western Athletic Conference championships, 51 points behind host BYU’s 79.

SDSU’s Doug Novak threw the hammer 174-feet 3 1/2-inches to finish third. Chris Alarcon and Rodney Van each long jumped 24-3 3/4 for third and fourth, and Matt Clayton ran the 10,000-meter run in 31:23.48 for fourth.
