A dozen protesters were arrested after they lay in the street in front of the White House to demand that the Administration step up funding for AIDS research. About 100 other protesters stood on the sidewalk. The demonstration in Washington was among several around the country. In Albany, N.Y., hundreds of activists bearing quilts embroidered with the names of AIDS victims marched from a city tulip festival to the state Capitol. In Washington the crowd at one point chanted “Spend the money. Test the drugs. Cut the red tape.” The chants later changed to “Take off the gloves” because some of the police officers wore latex gloves.
