College Roundup : Chapman Is Swept by Northridge

Chapman 4-0, Cal State Northridge 10-1--Chae-Ho Chong hit homers in both games to help Cal State Northridge sweep a doubleheader at Hart Park.

In the first game, Northridge (20-32 overall, 11-16 in conference play) had 16 hits, including 6 doubles and 2 home runs.

For Chapman (25-25-1, 14-14), starter Jim Bennett (4-5) gave up 14 hits and 7 runs in 5 innings. Tony Gardea hit a two-run homer for Chapman.

In the nightcap, Chong’s solo homer in the fourth inning accounted for the game’s only run as Northridge won, 1-0

In nonconference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 3-0, California 1-3--In the first game, freshman left-hander Anjie Bryant (26-7) allowed six hits and one unearned run for the victory at home. Third baseman Val Douglas had three hits and an RBI for seventh-ranked Fullerton (52-18)

In the second game, winning pitcher junior Erin Cassidy (21-7) allowed six hits and struck out eight for 11th-ranked Cal.

In Golden State Athletic Conference:

Azusa Pacific 4-7, Southern California College 3-0--In the first game, Azusa Pacific scored two runs in the eighth inning for the victory at home. Kevin Kasper went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and Eric Gasner stole 4 bases to lead SCC. In the second game, Josh Johnson was 2 for 3 to lead SCC, which finishes its season at 23-27 overall and 14-10 in conference play.

In the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division II softball regionals:

UC Irvine 9, Pacific 0--Jeff Haack (4-7) pitched six innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four, for Irvine (29-28-1, 8-12). Kevin Kandalaft picked up his fourth save, and john Seeburger hit a two-run home in the first inning.

In the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division II softball regionals: Mike Fay hit a three-run triple and Doug Kline went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for Irvine. Pacific is 20-30 and 10-10.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:

Cal State Bakersfield 2, Chapman 1--Margaret Harvey pitched a three-hitter and host Bakersfield scored in the seventh inning when Janis Heriford’s single drove in Sas Trotter. Cheri Schreck (13-10) allowed six hits in taking the loss.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 1, Chapman 0--Chapman’s season ended in double elimination at Bakersfield after San Luis Obispo scored in the third inning and Michelle Sorci made the run stand up by pitching a three-hitter. Chapman’s Jacki Blake (13-10) pitched a four-hitter in the loss. Chapman finishes 34-26.

In men’s crew:

The University of San Diego beat UC Irvine by seven seconds in the varsity eight event at East Mission Bay in San Diego. San Diego finished the 1,750 meters in 5 minutes 14 seconds.
