Guard Jeff Bregel and defensive tackle Kevin Fagan of the San Francisco 49ers were arrested early Saturday following an altercation with three Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies in the parking lot of a convenience store, police said.

Both players had been taking part this week in the 49ers’ mini-camp at their new Santa Clara practice facility.

Lt. Bob Stith said the trouble began about 1:30 a.m., when a deputy observed a Chevy Blazer driven by Bregel turn right from a left-hand turning lane.

“The officer followed the Blazer with the intent to make a stop for the turn,” Stith said. “He walked up to the driver’s side and asked for Bregel’s driver’s license.

“Bregel became abusive, and the officer noticed alcohol on his breath. The officer asked Bregel to get out of the vehicle and take a field sobriety test, but Bregel became hostile.”

With a crowd beginning to gather, additional units were called, and a scuffle took place between Bregel and three officers who were attempting to handcuff him.

“Bregel continued to resist being handcuffed, and ultimately the three deputies and Bregel fell to the ground,” Stith said.

Bregel was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and resisting arrest. He was released on a written promise he will appear later in court. Fagan was charged with resisting arrest, obstructing justice and misdeameanor battery. He was released on $2,500 bail.
