British politicians urged the government to block rival Swiss chocolate makers from building up stakes in British candy firm Rowntree PLC, whose products are household names in Britain. They said a 2.1-billion-pound ($3.9 billion U.S.) takeover bid by Nestle SA and a growing stake by its Swiss rival Jacob Suchard AG were against the national interest. The politicians’ call came as Suchard announced that it had snapped up more Rowntree shares, raising its holding to nearly 29%.
