Denmark will hold a parliamentary election today to resolve a controversy over a proposed tightening of its peacetime ban on nuclear weapons, a plan government officials said would threaten the nation’s full membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The snap election was called April 19 by Conservative Prime Minister Poul Schlueter after the Social Democratic-led majority in Parliament adopted a resolution that would require the minority government to notify visiting ships it is illegal to bring nuclear weapons into Danish territorial waters.
