Monterey Park : City to Celebrate Birthday
The city will stage a four-day celebration, “Play Days 1988,” in honor of its 72nd birthday, beginning next Thursday.
There will be music, dances, game booths, ethnic food and carnival rides in Barnes Park behind City Hall, said City Clerk David Barron, chairman of the event.
Small floats, equestrian units, high school bands and drill teams will parade along Garvey Avenue on May 21. From 9 a.m. until noon that day, 11 high school jazz bands will perform in a competition in the park, highlighted by a show by the Fullerton College Jazz Band.
The city trolley will run its normal weekday route May 21. City officials suggest that residents use the trolley rather than private vehicles that day.
