South Gate : Cultural Center Fund Drive
The South Gate City Council has given its approval for the Museum and Art Gallery Steering Committee to start a $240,000 fund-raising campaign to help pay for a proposed $745,000 cultural center.
However, the fund-raising efforts are contingent upon other funding factors. If the city does not come up with the remaining funds, any donations received by the committee must be returned.
The city is hopeful that Proposition 70, the Wildlife Coastal Parkland Bond Act, on the June 7 statewide ballot passes. The amount received by cities is based on population. South Gate would receive an estimated $275,000.
Those funds would be combined with other state and federal money, which includes $100,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds and $125,000 from a 1986 state parkland allocation.
The proposed 6,235-square-foot cultural center, which would be built in South Gate Park, would replace an older building near City Hall. The older building would be demolished and the lot used for city employee parking.
