Local News in Brief : Laguna Beach : City Plans Discussion on Illegal Apartments

Share

The city will conduct a question-and-answer session Saturday morning for residents on rules for bringing illegal apartments into compliance with municipal zoning regulations.

The informational meeting will be held at 10 a.m. at City Hall, 505 Forest Ave.

The city inherited about 100 complaints about South Laguna apartments constructed in violation of county zoning rules when South Laguna was annexed to the city Dec. 31, 1987.

On April 5, the City Council decided to phase in requirements to bring “bootleg” units into compliance with the residential zoning code, which limits structures to one living space per parcel of land.

As of July 1, most homeowners will have a 5-year grace period to remove the illegal units. However, some apartments, such as converted garages, must be removed within one year.

Other exceptions to the 5-year grace period also will be discussed. For more information, call City Hall at (714) 497-3311.
