Local News in Brief : RTD Drivers Go to Court

Share

The RTD bus drivers union will ask for a court order today blocking what it claims is an illegal attempt by the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission to force the union to make concessions at the negotiating table.

Prodding the Southern California Rapid Transit District board to get tough with its drivers union, the commission last month exercised its power over the county’s transit purse strings by voting to sharply reduce RTD funds if key contract changes are not made during current negotiations. Included among those changes are provisions to permit contracting out of services and to strengthen management’s rights to control costs and employees.

A union spokesman said the commission is improperly forcing the RTD and its drivers to negotiate in “bad faith,” a charge denied by a commission attorney.
