The National Collegiate Athletic Assn. reported that 20 of 1,589 athletes tested for drugs last fall--1.3%--tested positive and lost their eligibility.

That was a slight percentage increase from the 34 of 3,360 who tested positive during the entire 1986-87 academic year.
