Times Receives 5 Awards in S.D. Media Competition

The Los Angeles Times won two newswriting awards and five first-place honors at the 1987 Society of Professional Journalists/Sigma Delta Chi San Diego chapter editorial awards banquet Sunday.

Staff writer Ralph Frammolino garnered the top prize for investigative/enterprise reporting for publications with a circulation of more than 100,000 for a series of stories on the San Diego’s deposed housing commission director Ben Montijo.

Eric Bailey of the Times received first place in the feature story category for newspapers over 100,000 circulation for his portrait of a sculptor turned arsonist who destroyed his work at an Oceanside abbey.

Times photographer Dave Gatley earned two top awards. A series of photographs of transients in downtown San Diego received the photo essay award for newspapers of more than 100,000 circulation, while a shot of San Diego Padre Joey Cora snatched the top sports photo category.

Lee Brown, a San Diego State University journalism professor, won a first-place award for the Times in the editorial writing category for a guest commentary on illegal aliens.

The San Diego Union won eight first-place awards and the San Diego Tribune four top honors in the 100,000 circulation division, while the Escondido Times-Advocate took six first-place awards for papers under 100,000 circulation.

A team of Union reporters won first place in the spot news category. Other awards for the paper included: Mark Kreidler, sports reporting; Suzanne Choney, column; S. Lynne Walker and Diane Lindquist, financial reporting; Cheryl Clark and Ed Jahn, community service; Don Kohlbauer, feature photo; Mary Jo Zafis, feature page makeup; Dave Feldman, feature headline.

Tribune winners were: Bill Hagen, criticism; Joe Holly News photo; J.D. Crowe, editorial cartoon; Bill Weurding, news headline.

Times-Advocate staffers winning awards in the under 100,000 circulation category were: Paula Kriner, spot news; Mark Petix and Robert Gauthier, feature story; Frank Mickadeit and Heidi Holmblad, investigative/enterprise reporting; Irv Erdos, column; Mike Carroll, news page makeup; James Folmer, feature page makeup.

Other award winners included: Julie Walker, The La Costan, editorial writing, under 100,000 circulation; Elizabeth Douglass, The La Costan, financial writing under 100,000; Dean Nelson, Daily Transcript, community service under 100,000; Rick Randolph, The Beacon, editorial cartoon, under 100,000; Laura Impastato, Senior World, news makeup over 100,000; Thomas K. Arnold, San Diego Magazine, magazine in-depth reporting; Martin Hill, San Diego Magazine, magazine feature writing.
