Alain Prost won his fourth Monaco Grand Prix Sunday after leader Ayrton Senna was knocked out of the race at Monte Carlo with 11 laps to go.

The 30th Formula One victory of Prost’s career kept him in front of the season standings with 24 points. He has two firsts and a second in three races this year.

The 33-year-old Frenchmen won the 78-lap race in 1 hour 57 minutes 17.077 seconds over the 161.204 miles. He averaged 82.52 miles per hour on the twisting 2.068-mile track.

Gerhard Berger of Austria was second, 20.453 seconds behind, and Michele Alboreto of Italy was third, 41.229 seconds back.

Their Ferraris were the only other cars on the same lap as Prost’s McLaren-Honda after Senna slid into a guard rail at the Portier turn with 11 laps remaining and damaged the suspension of his car.

It was on a sweeping right-hand curve just before the famed tunnel that cost Senna his second straight Monaco victory.

Prost was more than 54 seconds back at the time.

Senna, who dominated the San Marino Grand Prix two weeks ago, ended up 11th, officially 12 laps behind.

Talk about close finishes. Jeff Krosnoff of Flintridge won the Coors Race Truck Challenge at Riverside by .001 of a second. Krosnoff, driving a Nissan-sponsored mini-truck, crossed the finish line with Bobby and Tommy Archer of Duluth, Minn., right on his heels.

“Beating the Archers is hard work,” Krosnoff said. “I wanted to keep them split as much as possible. I could go through the right hand turns better than them, but when they are hooked up, there are almost impossible to pass.”

About the finish, Krosnoff said: “His (Bobby Archer’s) door handle was just about 6 inches ahead of mine.”
