Rick Reuschel, who won 5 of his first 6 decisions for the San Francisco Giants, turned 39 Monday and celebrated by striking out 7 and walking only 1.

But it was Shane Rawley who took the cake for pitching performances at San Francisco, throwing a 2-hitter as the Philadelphia Phillies, the last-place team in the East, beat the Giants, 3-0.

Sixth-inning home runs by Lance Parrish and Chris James supported Rawley, who improved to 2-5 with his first complete game of the season. It was the sixth time the Giants have been shutout.

Mike Schmidt, who came into the game in an 0 for 30 slump, went 4 for 4 for the Phillies. Parrish followed Schmidt’s third hit with his sixth homer of the season to break a scoreless tie. One out later, James hit his fifth home run.

Rawley won 17 games last season, but none in September, and was winless this season until May 6. His best previous low-hit performance was a three-hitter against the Dodgers in 1985.

Cincinnati 4, Atlanta 2--The Braves were in pretty good shape in the game at Cincinnati, until Kevin Coffman, who had given up just 1 run and 3 hits, had to leave after 6 innings with an elbow injury.

Coffman was injured when he tagged out Cincinnati’s Lloyd McClendon, who was trying to score from second on a wild pitch. McClendon’s helmet hit Coffman’s pitching elbow after the tag.

“That was it,” Atlanta Manager Chuck Tanner said, “that was the turning point.”

Tanner inserted Zane Smith, normally a starter, who yielded three runs, two on Chris Sabo’s double.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati starter Tom Browning (2-0) had allowed only 5 hits in 8 innings before being lifted for a pinch-hitter with a two-run lead. Dave Collins subsequently stuck out to end a rally, but relievers Frank Williams and Rob Murphy preserved the win.

Cincinnati second baseman Jeff Treadway extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an eighth-inning single.

Houston 9, Pittsburgh 2--Denny Walling drove in 3 runs with a single and a walk and Glenn Davis added a two-run single at Houston as the Astros roughed up Pirate starter Bob Walk, who entered the game with four straight victories and a 1.32 earned-run average.

Walk (4-2) gave up 6 runs (4 earned) and 7 hits in 6 innings.

The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the third when Barry Bonds hit his 10th home run, but the Astros came back in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1.

New York 7, San Diego 4--Gary Carter’s three-run home run in the seventh inning at San Diego snapped a 4-4 tie and gave Dwight Gooden his seventh victory without a loss.

With the score tied, 4-4, Darryl Strawberry opened with a walk off Greg Booker (0-2). Kevin McReynolds singled to left before Carter hit his eighth home run of the year, delivering a 1-1 pitch over the left-center field fence. It was the 22nd home run by a Met in the team’s last 22 games and the 33rd Carter has hit against San Diego in his career.

Gooden struggled through the first 6 innings, giving up 10 hits and 4 earned runs. He retired the side in order only in the sixth inning, and Roger McDowell finished for his fourth save.

When Gooden was lifted in the seventh, it marked only the 15th time in 138 career starts he was removed from a game in the middle of an inning.

The Mets broke a 3-game losing streak with the win.
