Local News in Brief : Court Marshal Who Shot Gunman Honored
Clifford Wofford, a 30-year-old marshal who shot and killed a gunman in a Van Nuys courtroom in February, was awarded the County Medal of Valor Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors.
Wofford was seriously wounded when he exchanged gunfire with Jeremey A. Sigmond, who was holding a gun to the head of Deputy City Atty. Jessica Perrin Silvers. Silvers had obtained a guilty verdict against Sigmond earlier in a case stemming from a high-speed chase.
In presenting the medal, Supervisor Kenneth Hahn noted: “She’s alive today. You can thank God and thank Clifford for saving her life.” A beaming Silvers said, “I thank him every day.” About two dozen of Wofford’s colleagues attended the award ceremony, as did his parents.
