Sport and commerical marine fishing is suffering from fragmented state management, according to a San Diego sportfishing group. The National Coaliton for Marine Conservation--Pacific Region said state government is not collecting basic information needed for long-term management of fisheries. In releasing the results of a $100,000, 10-month study, the coalition suggested better management would eventually increase fish harvests and reduce commercial fishing costs. James Rote, chief adviser to the Joint Legislative Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture, said state legislators have been “thinking about trying to do something” to address the problems of spreading fishery management among the Fish and Game Commission, the Legislature and the Department of Fish and Game.
