Sao Paulo Features ‘Keystone Kouncil’
A City Council meeting turned into a slapstick brawl with members punching, kicking and throwing pieces of cream pie at each other.
It started Tuesday night when Councilman Antonio Carlos Fernandes showed up with a cream pie that he said was “in honor of Mayor Janio Quadros, for having 107 of his bills approved.”
Fernandes’ political opponent, Geraldo Blota, criticized the gesture as silly. Fernandes threw a piece of pie at Blota, who responded by punching Fernandes in the stomach.
Council members quickly took sides, punching and shoving each other on the assembly floor. The remainder of the pie was knocked off a desk and splattered over a journalist covering the session.
