Local News in Brief : Pay Clerk Suspended in Schools Theft Probe

Share

A female employee of the Las Virgenes Unified School District has been suspended as a result of an investigation into the possible diversion of $15,000 in district funds, officials said Thursday.

The woman, employed as a payroll clerk in the district’s headquarters since 1978, may have stolen the money by claiming more overtime than she was entitled, said Detective Ed Young of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators found $15,000 may have been diverted after going through records dating back to 1986, Young said.

Las Virgenes district officials said they learned about the possible diversion two weeks ago. They immediately launched an internal probe, and earlier this week turned over its results to sheriff’s detectives.

Results of the Sheriff’s Department investigation will be turned over to the county district attorney’s office, Young said.
