Area Roundup : Cirello Enjoys Early Success at Speedway

Share

While Bobby Schwartz, 1986 U.S. speedway motorcycle champion, continues to dominate the weekly racing program at the Orange County Fairgrounds, Trinon Cirello, a 17-year-old junior at Newport Harbor High School, has enjoyed success in only his second year of racing.

Cirello, the 1984 U.S. junior champion, has become a fixture among Division I riders on the Southern California circuit. He has recorded second- and fourth-place finishes in handicap main events in the opening seven weeks of racing at Costa Mesa.

Cirello is hoping his consistent performances will earn him a position in the U.S. championship qualifying rounds scheduled to begin in August. No rider has won both the junior championship and the national championship.

Schwartz continued his record-breaking pace at Costa Mesa with his fourth consecutive victory in the scratch main event last week. Schwartz has won five of the seven scratch main events at Costa Mesa this season.

Although Schwartz and Cirello will return to race at 8 tonight, popular Bobby Ott of Balboa is out of action indefinitely with a torn Achilles’ tendon suffered when he crashed with Keith Larsen and tangled his foot in the spokes of his motorcycle’s rear tire last week. Ott, who finished second in the 1987 U.S. championship, had two pins placed in his right heel.

Gates open at 6:30 p.m. with parking and programs free. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free.
