Local News in Brief : Anaheim : Caltrans Ponders Smoldering Cotton

Share

A stack of cotton continued to smolder for a third day Friday as firefighters and Caltrans officials tried to decide what to do with the mess left alongside the Riverside Freeway near State College Boulevard.

The cotton, which caught fire Wednesday while being transported on a truck, has been smoldering ever since firefighters doused it with water, fire officials said. Cause of the fire had not been determined Friday.

A California Highway Patrol spokesman said the CHP had received several phone calls from worried commuters about the smoldering cotton. An official of the Anaheim Fire Department, which responded to the fire, said the cotton fire had been extinguished and the cleanup job was the responsibility of the state Department of Transportation.

A spokeswoman for Caltrans, however, said the cotton would not be taken away until it was completely extinguished.

The spokeswoman said she did not know when the cotton would be cleared away but added that a 300-gallon water truck was en route Friday to soak the stack.
