President Reagan on Saturday plugged an American Film Institute program designed to preserve old films. The President spoke at “A Fred Astaire Remembrance,” an AFI-sponsored fund-raiser honoring the late song-and-dance man. Reagan himself appeared (briefly) in clips from “This Is the Army,” an Irving Berlin musical in which Reagan appeared while he was a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps film unit during World War II. “What a surprise,” the President quipped. “I usually know when I’m going to be on the late, late show.”
