British writer-director David Cammell’s film about a serial killer, “White of the Eye,” will not be rated X by the Motion Picture Assn. of America, after all--and an assist on the decision should be scored for Marlon Brando. Brando wrote to MPAA ratings czar Richard Heffner pleading Cammell’s case to downgrade the X to an R, saying the film was “a work of artistry and power, (throwing) a dark light on the essence of the most appalling variety of mental deformity known to our society: the ‘motiveless’ or ‘serial’ killer.” The ratings change will allow the film a much wider release than would have been possible with an X. P.S.: Cammell and Brando will work together on “Jericho,” which Brando wrote and Cammell will direct.
