The Consumer Product Safety Commission voted today to ban most lawn darts, citing the danger of death or serious injury from the pointed metal toys.

The ban could take effect by the end of the year. Three children, aged 4, 7 and 13, have been killed in accidents involving the darts in recent years, according to commission records. The matter now goes back to the commission staff to develop a formal ruling to enforce the ban and to solicit public comment.
