American Tim Mayotte and No. 8 women’s seed Hana Mandlikova were eliminated in second-round surprises of the French Open today. The upset wave did not reach defending champion Steffi Graf, the other top women’s seeds--Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina--or men’s seeds Stefan Edberg and Mats Wilander, both of Sweden, and America’s new young hope Andre Agassi, all of whom romped to easy victories.

Mayotte fell 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 to Magnus Gustaffson of Sweden. Earlier, Bettina Fulco of Argentina ousted Mandlikova, the former French Open champion, 6-4, 6-3. Navratilova was leading Hellas Ter Riet of the Netherlands 6-0 1-0 when her opponent became ill and defaulted. Graf cruised past Ronnie Reis of the United States 6-1, 6-0; No. 3 Evert beat Barbara Romano of Italy 7-5, 6-2; Sabatini, the women’s fourth seed, defeated Karen Schimper of South Africa 6-3, 6-0. Among the men, second-seeded Edberg defeated Arnaud Boetch of France 6-0, 6-4, 6-3 and third-seeded Wilander beat Francisco Yunis of Argentina 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. Ninth-seeded Agassi downed Massimiliano Narducci of Italy 6-1, 6-2, 6-2
