World Indoor Football Debuts in San Diego June 26

The World Indoor Football League will make its debut in San Diego June 26 when the San Diego Thunder plays host to Baltimore.

San Diego will open its schedule at St. Louis June 20 before coming home for its local debut in the San Diego Sports Arena. The Thunder’s 10-game schedule, released Tuesday:

June 20--at St. Louis; June 26--Baltimore; June 30--at Indianapolis; July 7--at Las Vegas; July 14--San Antonio; July 23--at Baltimore; July 31--St. Louis; Aug. 5--Indianapolis; Aug. 14--Las Vegas; Aug. 18--at San Antonio.

The Thunder, coached by former British Columbia Lion Coach Don Matthews, will conduct an open tryout camp Saturday at Mission Bay High School at 10 a.m.

Any players who have used up all of their college eligibility are encouraged to try out.

VOLLEYBALL

Marv Dunphy, who coached the U.S. men’s volleyball team to unprecedented victories at the 1985 World Cup and 1986 World Championships, will resign from the program after the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea.

Dunphy will return as head coach of the Pepperdine men’s volleyball team, which he led to two national championships and a 118-32 record in six years.

BASKETBALL

Rita Hollingsworth, a 5-foot 8-inch guard from Tipton (Ind.) High School, has signed a national letter of intent to attend San Diego State, Earnest Riggins, women’s basketball coach, announced. Hollingsworth averaged 15 points and 4 assists and holds the Tipton single-game scoring record with 31 points.

TENNIS

Melinda Ainslie and Traci Reynolds of Point Loma Nazarene College advanced to the third round of doubles play at the NAIA national championships at Overland Park, Kan.

Ainslie was eliminated in the third round of singles, losing to 17th-seeded Michele Wheeler of Texas of the Permian Basin, 6-0, 6-1. Ainslie defeated Janet Lugt of Highpoint (N.C.) College, 7-5, 6-4, earlier in the day.
