UCLA sophomore Lisa Longaker pitched a three-hit shutout to give the No. 1-ranked Bruins a 1-0 victory over Northern Illinois in the opening game of the NCAA Division I softball College World Series at Sunnyvale, Calif.

The Bruins scored their only run in the top of the first inning when freshman Shanna Flynn led off with a single to center, moved up on a groundout and a fielder’s choice, and scored on a wild pitch by Northern Illinois pitcher Beth Schrader.

Schrader (24-5) held the Bruins to four singles, three by Flynn.

Northern Illinois threatened in the sixth inning, putting runners at first and second with one out. But Longaker got both Lisa Gilfoy and Sue Kowse, Illinois’ No. 4 and 5 hitters, to fly out, ending the inning.
