Placido Domingo led New York’s Metropolitan Opera to a thunderous welcome from fans Wednesday in Tokyo as the Met opened its second Japan tour with Domingo in the leading role in “The Tales of Hoffmann.” The Met has toured outside of North America only four times. The four-hour performance was punctuated by applause and shouts of approval after each number. By the fourth curtain call, most of the audience was on its feet. Applause continued for 11 minutes after the final curtain.
