UC Berkeley is one of three university campuses selected to house National Science Foundation biological research centers to study cells, plants and insects. The center will be started with a $2-million, 5-year grant to study the development of plants and their fruits. The foundation has awarded nearly $6 million to create the centers in an effort to stimulate growth in the field of biotechnology. Centers will also be located at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and the University of Arizona in Tucson.
