Newport Corp., a Fountain Valley-based manufacturer of laser equipment, reported that net income for the third quarter ended April 30 rose 72%, to $2 million, from $1.2 million for the year-earlier third quarter. Sales increased 30%, to $13.8 million, from $10.7 million for the corresponding quarter of 1987. For the nine-month period, net income increased 46%, to $5.1 million compared to $3.5 million for the same period a year ago. Sales totaled $38.6 million, 21% higher than the $31.9 million posted a year earlier. The company attributed the increases to strong international markets and demand for products introduced during the last year.
