A man describing himself as a Vietnam veteran has started a hunger fast in Sacramento, saying he will not eat until construction begins on a state Vietnam veterans memorial. David McMurray started his fast on Memorial Day at the memorial site behind the state Capitol, where he added the word “no” to the “men working” signs. Work on the memorial is to start later this week, said B. T. Collins, once chief of staff to Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. and a member of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Commission. “I packed my kid brother home in a body bag, and I find it offensive that sunshine patriots are getting all the political mileage out of this (project) that they can,” McMurray said.
