Four Red Cross officials began interviewing political prisoners and investigating prison conditions in Cuba, according to a spokesman for the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross. The four-week visit is the first since Fidel Castro came to power 29 years ago. Cuba says it has 323 “state security” prisoners; it declines to classify them as political prisoners. The Red Cross team will give a confidential report to the Cuban government after the visit. In New York, the United Nations named a six-member team to visit Cuba in September to investigate the human rights situation.
