CAMPAIGN ’88 : McCarthy in Running for Presidency Again
Former Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy (D-Minn.), a presidential hopeful in 1968 and 1976, said Tuesday that he will run again for the White House this year as the candidate of the tiny Consumer Party of Philadelphia.
In a telephone interview from Washington, McCarthy, 72, said he would announce his candidacy today at Independence Hall.
McCarthy deferred questions about his 1988 candidacy until his announcement, but he made it clear that he is dissatisfied with Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, the Democratic front-runner, and Vice President George Bush, the all-but-nominated GOP candidate.
“I don’t think Dukakis or Bush are raising four or five critical issues that ought to be talked about in 1988,” McCarthy said.
He said he wants to pursue his campaign, started with his 1976 race for the presidency, to change the two-party system. That year he ran as an independent.
