Local News in Brief : City Official Announces Plans

Carson City Administrator Dick Gunnarson, who suddenly announced Wednesday that he would resign at the end of the month, says that he intends to travel to Sweden after retiring.

“I’m fine and my wife is fine,” Gunnarson said Thursday in an interview. “That is maybe the biggest factor in going. I want to go to Sweden to see my dad’s people.”

Gunnarson, who sought and received a one-year extension to his $84,000-a-year contract less than one month ago, said he intended to remain a full year when he asked that his contract be renewed.

“At the time, I had every intention of going the whole ball game,” he said, adding that he changed his mind after “discussion at home. . . . I leave with very mixed emotions. If it were just me, maybe I would stay. I feel bad about going. I really do.”
